As an equine photographer, my goal is always to make the most of each location, ensuring the images not only showcase a variety of perspectives but also evoke memories of all the special times spent together. During Spring, I had the pleasure of spending an unforgettable afternoon photographing Gabby and her horse JJ, with Gabby’s sister Felicity and their mother Ruth joining in for the fun. The setting? JJ’s home yard, a place where the family had shared countless happy hours. The familiar environment allowed JJ to be calm and comfortable, and there was no need to transport him elsewhere.

JJ’s easy-going nature made him a joy to work with—he was an absolute pro when it came to posing, as was Gabby and her whole family. I started the shoot by positioning Gabby, JJ, and Felicity just inside the stable entrance, using the natural light falling off to create beautiful black background portraits. It’s an easy technique that doesn’t require additional lighting or backdrops, and the results are always stunning.

When photographing, I’m constantly on the lookout for textures and colours that add depth to my images. One of my favourite spots was the brick wall with wood panelling, which added even more variety to the portraits. I was also able to capture one of JJ’s most stunning features—his striking blue eye, along with the unique markings on his opposite side—all in a single shot in front of the old stables.

And then there was the surrounding landscape, which was in full spring bloom. I always aim to incorporate natural elements into my portraits, but this location truly spoiled me! The hawthorn hedge was in full bloom, the cow parsley was plentiful, and long grass framed the scene beautifully. When I spotted the uncut hay field, I knew it would make for some magical shots. Gabby and JJ walking through the tall grass was pure perfection. Gabby’s green dress brought an extra touch of romance to the scene as they strolled beneath the shade of a large tree—another picture-perfect setting for more creative silhouette-style images.

Fun fact: the second image presented above even won an online competition for “Pony with the Best Bottom”—a fun reminder of just how much character JJ brought to every frame!

The whole afternoon was a mix of casual, candid moments and thoughtfully composed portraits, showing just how much variety can be created with natural light, beautiful backdrops, and the right outfits. But at the heart of every image was the deep bond shared between JJ and Gabby, and between their family. The photos are more than just pictures—they are memories of an afternoon spent together in the spring sunshine.

Every location, every setting has its own charm, and my job is to transform those surroundings into lasting memories. By working with the light, textures, and natural elements, I can help you create art that captures the love and connection you share with your own equine partner.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look at my photoshoot with JJ, Gabby, Ruth, and Felicity. If you’re inspired to capture your own story, don’t hesitate to reach out. Let’s create something beautiful together, and keep those cherished moments safe for tomorrow.

Warm wishes,

Liz
